My Family Rants

It’s hard to believe it was 5 years ago today that my dear mother left this world.  I think about her every single day.  Her death ended many years of pain, both mental and physical.  I imagine her now somewhere at peace and without pain or worry.  I sense her close to me always.

I miss the way I could talk to her about almost anything, like she was a girlfriend instead of my mother.  I miss the horrible fruit juice she used to make that was so incredibly watered down.  I miss her calling me about something on TV that she thought I would be interested in, even though usually I wasn’t.

I grieve that she did not live long enough to see me walk down the aisle, or to meet her two grand daughters.  I am grateful that she was still here when my son was born, but sad that she was mostly too unhealthy to enjoy him.  I do believe that she is watching over me and my family, and that gives me comfort.

Love you mom!

Went way better than I thought it would!  Thought the shopping mall was PACKED, I think every person in the Province decided today would be a great day to hit the mall too…

The girls were very well behaved, all considering.  Here’s what I love about the Upper Canada Mall :

Family Washrooms: big enough to fit a double stroller, and they have a little potty beside the big toilet.  My daughter, who is potty training loved this!  Until that is the toilet flushed on it’s own when she was on it!!!  She totally freaked out, I think she might need therapy.  Seriously though, she was okay once I explained all Mall potty’s flushed on their own.

Stroller rentals: okay, while I had the double stroller with me, if I didn’t; I could have rented a two level FIRE TRUCK stroller!  Totally awesome!

Play Park: The best distraction……..and bribe for my toddler.  This walled in mini park is the perfect place to sit and feed the baby while my toddler runs wild with other toddlers and kids.

Then there are the stores, which were all having boxing day sales today!  My favorite include:

OLD NAVY

CHILDREN’S PLACE

Jacob Connection, Roots, Mexx, H&M etc. etc.

Mother In Laws; some also call them “Monster in laws”…………………but here’s the thing,

I

LOVE

My Mother in Law!!

I think I am the exception to the rule, I have an excellent relationship with my mother in law.  I hear the nightmare stories from my girlfriends about their mother in laws and I cringe…!  But I never have an issue, and I think my friends stare at me in envy.  Jealous much??

My mother in law has been in my life since I was 15, and has acted like a mother to me since I can remember.  She helps with the kids, yes HELPS, does not interfer.  She respects my methods of keeping a household and raising the kids.  She has never said to me “you SHOULD be doing it this way”.  She does not have those “mommy & son” issues I have heard about.

Now she has a few “quirks”.  She likes to spoil the children, and as a Granny I figure it is her right to do so.  But she is kind of obsessed with a few items;

CHAIRS

I don’t know why but this one is a huge obsession!  The kids have so many chairs I don’t know where to put them all, i.e. little Dora Directors Chair, mini Antique Queen Anne Chair (times 2!!!), little red bean bag chairs, and the most recent purchase for the baby a little wooden rocking chair that converts into a stool or a regular chair (k it’s very cool).  My mother in law buys them some new little chair everytime I’m not looking!  Jeez it’s FUNNY!

Night Lights, blankets, Xmas tree ornaments, books, towels

Mitts; gloves, mitts, water proof, hand knit, mitts with strings to wind through the sleeves, red, pink, blue, white I have a bench in my hall FILLED with mitts………….so at least I’ll never run out as the kids lose them!!

So here is my post dedicated to my Mother In Law; thanks for always being there, helping us out when we need you, and even when we don’t (not meant to be sarcastic), loving the kids the way you do, being a mother, therapist, cleaner, personal shopper, handyman, gardener, and most of all; friend!

What the hell am I talking about right?

This is one of the tools that my family counselor has taught me to use when dealing with people; my husband, my employees, even my kids….and actually even myself.

Each and every person is EITHER Right Brained, or Left Brained.  I for SURE am left brained, and my husband for SURE is Right brained.  I am very logical, organized, everything in my life revolves around facts & numbers.  My husband is a dreamer, he is always coming up with fabulous ideas, he is a risk taker, an adventurer.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
“big picture” oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can “get it” (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking

So I apply this theory to my children, are they right brained or left brained?  My son for sure is left brained; he excels in math, reading, he is very academic, very detailed, very logical.  My daughter for sure (even at age 2 I can tell) is right brained; she loves to colour & draw, but doesn’t not for very long, she always has many things on the go.  She is very musical, definately a risk taker, loves pretending.

Identifying a person as left brained vs right brained helps me to understand how they look at things, and helps me deal better with that person.  Instead of getting frustrated with my husbands constant “hey I’ve got a great idea” (at least 10 times a day), I center him, write down the ideas, help to be the one to get the details organized so that idea might actually take shape into a viable business idea.

I use this in business when dealing with employees.  If an employee is left brained, they are probably not a good fit for a graphic designs type job.  But they would be excellent in accounting!

Red cheeks, snotty nose, diaper rash……….she is definately teething!
Also sleeping alot, she fell asleep while I was feeding her baby cereal in her high chair! Poor thing!

Some tips from Canadian Living

I’ve heard different opinions of oral gels to relieve teething, but we have used it, for example baby Anbesol

Now that Ive read a bit more on the subject, I don’t think I’ll use it much anymore!

It’s a funny stage I’m at in my family, I’ve got a baby who has the front teeth coming in, and a 6 year old who has the same teeth falling out!!!

First of all, I am reminded at Christmas how blessed I am.  I have 3 healthy, happy children.  I have food on the table, and enough money to give my children toys under the tree, and a roof over their head at Christmas.  I realize that many do not have these blessings.  So at Christmas, I am grateful.

We had a wonderful Christmas!  It was chaotic from start to finish, and my house is completely TRASHED, but it was all worth it!

We got to visit with friends & family.  Eat, Drink & be Merry.  It was wonderful!

My hubby knows the power of the beautiful little blue boxes, and he got me a few items of jewelry from Swarovfski

The kids got spoiled, mostly by their grandparents, not me :)!  Now I’ll need to sort through their playroom and get a few older toys ready to go to the Salvation Army. That is our local charity of choice, as they make sure items go to familys in our area in need. I also believe this serves a lesson to our children (at least I hope it does) that they should be greatful for each and every toy they have, because there are many children without.

The BIG gift / surprise for me is coming today, a new sectional sofa for our odd-shaped living room.  My husband and MIL conspired on this one together, I can’t wait to see it!

I hope everyone else had a wonderful Christmas too!  Guess I’ll be spending the next week or so cleaning up!

grinch3Finally all DONE everything, all the shopping, wrapping, groceries, baking,

okay fine you caught me I don’t bake, I cheat and I buy little cupcakes and gingerbread yummies

I SWORE this year I would be more prepared, done earlier, I promised myself I would not STRESS out about Christmas

I started shopping in October for the love of GAWD!

It still came down to the last week before Christmas being the week from HELL, running around like a chicken with my head cut off.

Plus I got my damn monthly visitor from HELL, so wacky hormones made it all seems 10,000 times worse!

So now tomorrow is Xmas Eve, and I’m all done and READY…………and you know what?  I feel good, I can start to feel my heart warming up with a bit of Christmas spirit……….just like the Grinch that stole Christmas………….

I am now officially looking forward to enjoying the next few days with my family, and watching the kids enjoy Christmas.

Merry Freakin Christmas Everyone!
